Books: It is my intention to construct small art works, usually not exceeding 21 x 30 cm, in a variety of hand-produced book formats: concertina, loose-leaf, three-dimensional, bound, boxed. The books are limited editions and there is likely to be some variety within the edition. The books are intended to be an alternative to mass-produced printed books. In most cases they are portable and can be read as books, hung or displayed as freestanding artworks. The content of the books is related to ideas and concepts that concern me and reflect aspects of my artwork practices. Images, colour, sculptural quality are of prime importance and printed text is sometimes included. My methods of production are varied and include painting, graphics, collaged materials and photography. The book covers are made by hand, as are the books. Maureen O'Brien is a painter and collagist who is fine art trained with an MA from Central Saint Martins. Her work is essentially based on responses to the environments she encounters on a daily basis. She is particularly interested in observing and interpreting visual form in towns whether structural or that which can be found in the small found objects or the detritus of the urban street. As well as making books, she works in a variety of media including collage, photography, drawing, painting and three-dimensional forms.
